Talking about Brown's Hiring Freeze on Twitter
Title
Talking about Brown's Hiring Freeze on Twitter
Description
On March 23rd, Brown University announced that, "effective immediately and until further notice, the University will suspend any new hiring for the current year and for the fiscal year beginning July 1." I mentioned the email on Twitter and posted relevant screenshots and links in an ensuing thread. According to the "Twitter Analytics" Twitter provides to its users, the tweet made over 300,000 "Impressions" and had over 45,000 "Total Engagements" between the time I posted it and today (4/16/20). This decision will clearly impact Providence and Rhode Island in various ways and it is reminiscent of a similar hiring freeze adopted by Brown during the "Great Recession"of 2008. The attention it received on social media also reveals larger concerns about the short-term and long-term future of higher education.
