              <text>I wish I could tell you this global pandemic has allowed me to take the time to improve upon myself. This, however, would be a big, fat lie. I am devastated. I am thankful that no one I know is sick, but that doesn’t change the fact that I cry myself to sleep every other night. I assume a lot of people reflect on pre-corona times as better times, but for me it all blends together. I was struggling before this pandemic exploded in my face. Still, however, the future gave me hope. Growing up, I always bragged about having the coolest graduation year, 2020. Go figure, huh. I wanted to wear a cap and gown. I wanted to make my family proud. I wanted to celebrate with my friends. Instead, I have not seen them in months. I can not help but feel like time is running out. I do not want to be six feet apart anymore. I want a hug. This was supposed to be a magical time, but I feel as though I am in a horror movie instead of a fantasy film. I want this nightmare to end. I want to feel proud of four years of hard work instead of spending what’s supposed to be the final home stretch of my education in despair. Instead of mastering a new skill, my bad habits have only gotten worse. Distance learning does not work for me. I’ve become a master procrastinator. That, however, isn’t even the worst of it. It’s so easy to go insane when you have all the time in the world to overthink. I beat myself up all day. My inner voice is relentless. I wish it would just shut up, but alas I feel as though I am constantly in a battle with myself, my worst enemy. Do not be so hard on yourself, everyone says. They are right, but I never listen. Every day, I set my alarm for early in the morning so that I can wake up and have a fresh start. I think of elaborate plans to become someone that meditates in the morning and goes on runs. Nonetheless, I always wake at noon and feel guilty that I failed to execute the unrealistic endeavors I dreamt of the night before. I know I can not control this virus, but you’d think I could at least control myself.</text>

              <text>As far as I can remember, there has never been a time where I have had to be away from my family and those I love. I have always been able to see them as frequently or as little as I wanted.&#13;
&#13;
The future of the world/planet seems so uncertain at this time and it’s hard to predict what’s in store... I do think that things will get worse before they get better.&#13;
&#13;
One of the dreams I have for my child is definitely a world without covid and so many restrictions. I dream of the day where we/he can go outside again and not have to wear a mask, or not have to be so aware of not touching surfaces, and having to maintain distance from others.&#13;
&#13;
For future generations, I would like them to know that this year has been one of the hardest we’ve had to endure. (In my opinion)... I would also like for them to keep this year in the back of their minds, just incase something like this were to ever happen again they can be better prepared.&#13;
&#13;
My relationship with uncertainty can be labeled as tragic. I dislike not knowing or not being able to envision what will happen next. It’s definitely not a good feeling.&#13;
&#13;
Distance seems unbelievably hard right now. Ever since covid started I think we have all become a lot more conscious about those we can’t see or talk to due to the distance.&#13;
&#13;
In regards to time, there are days that seem to fly by for me and there are also days that feel extremely long.&#13;
&#13;
Thankfully everyone who I would consider essential in my life are near by and with the help of technology we have been able to maintain contact.&#13;
&#13;
My house definitely feels crowded. Although there aren’t many of us in the home, there are days when there doesn’t seem to be enough space for everyone. Seeking alone time for me usually looks like taking a drive, or sitting in my basement for a little bit.&#13;
&#13;
Something kind that my son and I did recently was to empty out his toy boxes and donate them ! Especially with Christmas being around the corner it was the perfect time.&#13;
&#13;
A message that I would tell myself a year ago would be, to appreciate the time I have with others a little more.&#13;

                  <text>In these five essays, first year college students in Professor Martha Kuhlman's Writing Workshop 106 class at Bryant University reflect on their experiences under the COVID lockdown at the end of August, 2020. To help students think about how to represent this difficult time, we read “We can’t comprehend this much sorrow” by Teju Cole, which was published in the New York Times May 18, 2020. Cole writes eloquently about his perspective on the pandemic from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is a professor of Creative Writing at Harvard. He adopts a diary format, which you will note in these student essays as well, to meditate upon his connections to New York, Nigeria, Cambridge and the rest of the world as the pandemic numbers in New York State rise.&#13;
&#13;
The students responded to the prompt, “Reflect on your own experiences with the COVID quarantine. What was difficult, and what kept you going?” You will hear from a student who had an epiphany about her own personality, a musician whose musical was cancelled, a student who worked at a hardware store, a student from the Dominican Republic, and a student whose mother passed away from cancer. My heartfelt thanks to the students for sharing their personal insights with us.</text>
