Inspired by Lynda Barry’s COVID diary, which appeared in the New York Times on May 8th 2020, I decided to keep my own collage diary. I began with the simple prompt, “When did this become real for you?” Some chaotic impressions tumble out on that first page as I recount my memories of an oddly timed trip to New York City just prior to the lockdown. I took on the diary project thinking it would give me something constructive to do other than just feeling immobilized, but I never could have imagined all of the unlikely and devastating events that were to unfold in the coming months. So many deaths: George Floyd, Brianna Taylor, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, John Lewis. So many unbelievable and terrifying things were happening—fires in California, a mass death of pilot whales, violence against protestors, political strife, and always the numbers of COVID dead kept mounting. In these pages, I track large events and small ones, reflections and encounters, from March 16 through Sept 2020 while living here in Providence Rhode Island. Ordinary life in this strange new world of COVID shelter-in-place is juxtaposed with grim statistics from the daily headlines. This pandemic has touched so many that no one can remain unaffected. The “old” normal was never really fair. One hopes that the “new” normal, whatever form that might take, will be more just, but there is never any guarantee unless we fight for it. In these five essays, first year college students in Professor Martha Kuhlman's Writing Workshop 106 class at Bryant University reflect on their experiences under the COVID lockdown at the end of August, 2020. To help students think about how to represent this difficult time, we read “We can’t comprehend this much sorrow” by Teju Cole, which was published in the New York Times May 18, 2020. Cole writes eloquently about his perspective on the pandemic from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is a professor of Creative Writing at Harvard. He adopts a diary format, which you will note in these student essays as well, to meditate upon his connections to New York, Nigeria, Cambridge and the rest of the world as the pandemic numbers in New York State rise. The students responded to the prompt, “Reflect on your own experiences with the COVID quarantine. What was difficult, and what kept you going?” You will hear from a student who had an epiphany about her own personality, a musician whose musical was cancelled, a student who worked at a hardware store, a student from the Dominican Republic, and a student whose mother passed away from cancer. My son who is 4 and my husband were very happy. A few weeks later the entire world found out about COVID 19. There were no studies on the effect of this disease could have on pregnancy. We wore gloves and face masks everywhere. It was so weird seeing everyone with their face covered. My son was upset he couldn’t go out so much. But we got creative. We painted, decorated my sons room, played our musical instruments and we cooked and baked a lot! We mostly went for car rides but hardly ever got out of the car. Most of our shopping was done online. Everything was different. When our baby was born we were sad we couldn’t have any visitors. That helped her stay safe and healthy. We now realize how following guidelines has helped our family stay healthy even if it feels annoying and overwhelming, but for now we will keep waiting for a vaccine so that soon we can gather with our families and friends.
