A digital image from Fortnite's "Creative Mode"depicting an individual at home during Covid-19 and Bubonic plague. The side by side images compare and contrast the housing and resource situations during the separate pandemics. This piece expresses how the Black Death and the Covid-19 pandemic are similar, and also how they are different. It shows that they were similar through the struggles of being trapped inside. Both pandemics forced us to stay in our homes and rethink life as we knew it. For us, school, business, politics, and so on changed, and the same is true for the people during the Black Death to an extent. The differences that are shown are the differences in housing and resources. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we had much nicer houses with things like air conditioning to keep us cool, and computers to allow us to chat with friends and do work. During the Black Death, the homes were much worse, and there were no real ways to connect with others or to work and earn money. This piece was created inside of Fortnite’s “Creative Mode”; a mode where players can use different items and devices to create experiences for other players around the world. The mode can be used to create racing maps or a cool adventure game, but it can also be used to create art and express yourself. I’m a terrible artist, so I thought, “Why not use a system that I am not only accustomed to but a system built into the game that I enjoy playing?”. Creator Who created this item? Adaptive Practices was an interactive project developed at PPL in the spring of 2020 as the pandemic necessitated closing public spaces and prohibited public gatherings. In March, as we considered how PPL might re-imagine our programming to both reflect and work within the perimeters of this new reality, we talked with our cadre of  Creative Fellows: Laura Brown-Lavoie, Becci Davis, Kelly Eriksen, Keri King, Walker Mettling, and Micah Salkind, six artists and creators who had each worked on a long-term, original project within our Special Collections. We thought about how, as artists, their endeavors often encompassed venturing into the unknown, enduring “fallow” periods of reflection and synthesis in which no immediate “product” would result, and working in solitude when research or experimentation was necessary. So we asked them to share their work with us in a way that would allow us to see and maybe even experience how they navigate and negotiate these conditions of uncertainty and unfamiliarity, and the result was this project. We wrote this open letter in June 2020 to Womxn of Color in Rhode Island, 3 months after RI declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19, and in the midst of the national uprisings against structural racism and the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and so many of our other Black sibilngs. We wrote this letter to Womxn of Color know that we see them, to acknowledge that our communities were in crisis before the global pandemic, and to ask Womxn of Color to stand with us in demanding divestment from state and local police and the Rhode Island Department of Corrections and reinvestment in the health of our communities, and long term infrastructure.
