Learn about how De La Salle 6th and 8th grade students adapted to quarantine and distance learning. As part of their social studies classes, students were asked to share what they did while stuck at home including taking classes via Zoom (a video conferencing program), pursuing new and old hobbies, staying connected with friends, and spending WAY more time with their families than ever before. They were able to share these videos and slideshows with their classmates and hope that sometime in the future these projects will help students just like them learn about the unusual spring of 2020. </text>

<text>In these five essays, first year college students in Professor Martha Kuhlman's Writing Workshop 106 class at Bryant University reflect on their experiences under the COVID lockdown at the end of August, 2020. To help students think about how to represent this difficult time, we read “We can’t comprehend this much sorrow” by Teju Cole, which was published in the New York Times May 18, 2020. Cole writes eloquently about his perspective on the pandemic from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is a professor of Creative Writing at Harvard. He adopts a diary format, which you will note in these student essays as well, to meditate upon his connections to New York, Nigeria, Cambridge and the rest of the world as the pandemic numbers in New York State rise.

The students responded to the prompt, “Reflect on your own experiences with the COVID quarantine. What was difficult, and what kept you going?” You will hear from a student who had an epiphany about her own personality, a musician whose musical was cancelled, a student who worked at a hardware store, a student from the Dominican Republic, and a student whose mother passed away from cancer. My heartfelt thanks to the students for sharing their personal insights with us.</text>

All of these qualities were put to the test for students this year, especially our graduating seniors. The Paul Cuffee class of 2020 experienced a senior year unlike any other- cut short just before that time of year when, "I am graduating" sinks in and becomes reality. No prom, no senior trip, no senior dinner or portfolio presentations, and certainly no deafening applause as they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. However, despite this and because of this, our class of 2020 was able to show amazing grit and resilience in order to pass their classes and earn their diplomas with a drive-through graduation ceremony! This class has truly exemplified what it means to be committed to academic and personal growth, as well as a willingness to look outside themselves to find opportunities to make meaningful impacts in their communities (small and large). It was with this in mind that their History teacher, Griffin Quirk, asked them to complete their final project- a reflective essay on what "I am Paul Cuffee 2020" means to them. Here is a collection of some of those responses, unedited or redacted...personal and raw but, most importantly, honest</text>

<text>Luckily I chose a vital profession for my life’s work because I can keep working during any shutdowns, albeit from my desk overlooking the Providence River when there schools are locked down. My teaching position at Paul Cuffee Upper School, a maritime-themed charter school in Providence, also affords me many other benefits. I get to work with focused teenagers from different and challenging backgrounds in a small school (less than 300 students in grades 9-12). My commute when school is physically in session is essentially a ride from Pawtuxet Village through Roger Williams Park to Elmwood Avenue.

The size of Paul Cuffee Upper School allows the staff to get to know every child and not let anyone fall through the cracks. Such circumstances have probably contributed to the school being ranked for two years in a row by US News and World Report as the number one charter school in Rhode Island, the top high school in Providence along with Classical High School, and one of the top 20 schools in Rhode Island. The ranking is based on the pass-rate for Advanced Placement exams, graduation rate, proportion of under-served population, and the like. This ranking is particularly striking since the under-served student population equates to 93% minority (mostly Latino) and 73% economically disadvantaged. Furthermore, the Latino population in Providence has disproportionately suffered the most dire consequences regarding the Covid 19 onslaught.

So, the view from this old union teacher’s desk is never dull and I am lucky to be in the position I am. Finally, check out the namesake of the school, Paul Cuffee. He was quite a man, and his wife and family were trailblazers along with him.</text>

</text>
