I’m more of home body than anything, I enjoy the comforts of my bed, my covers, and my phone. The thought of staying at home for a long period of time but this time with an excuse sounded like a dream come true. But little did I know, it would be an absolute nightmare. The feeling of being trapped in one place over something you cannot control is something I have never thought I would be afraid of. The countless days wasted away during the summer time were complete torture and I have never wanted to leave my house more than then. The thought of going on a walk just to get some air had turned into something more life or death than anything. And I, as a teen, my life being nothing but friends, technology, and sleep, had changed basically forever. My father and I used to always go on drives with one another to relieve stress but now the car was only used for one time trips back and forth to different stores, hoping to find some toilet paper! And of course to buy food and different necessities. As the days progressed, different things in my life had new meaning. My phone before was nothing more than something to entertain me, but it had soon become my main source of maintaining relationships. My bed soon became the place I hated the most and my house became a cage with no key. My optimism soon diminished as COVID cases kept rising then falling then spiking once more. I never would’ve thought the one place I call home would be the most hated place to be. But I learned many things about myself. How I enjoy writing more than anything. And how preparing snacks late at night would be something I am quite good at. Despite our society’s current climate, this quarantine has equally been a blessing and a curse. If I went to tell my past self that I would not be able to leave and see my friends every day at school or at dance, I would not believe myself. Coronavirus did not seem like a problem in the beginning. The first thing the pandemic impacted in my life was my school trip to Italy during April break. Everyone was confused as to why we had to reschedule the thousands of dollar trip that had been planned for over a year. A few weeks later the horrors of COVID-19 became much more apparent. Before we knew it, the virus blew up in the United States. Questions and rumors that school would be cancelled for a week started to arise. People either didn’t seem to think that the virus was a big deal. Then hand sanitizer waas everywhere, washing your hands more than normal causing your hands to become so dry. March 13, 2020, just what was supposed to be a normal Friday. Quizzes and tests scheduled for the following week, talks of prom and events being planned. That morning I had a friend tell me that there was supposed to be no school the next week, that would count as spring break. How dare the state take away spring break that tons of people had vacations planned for? Sitting in English class, what I didn’t know would be my last in school class for my junior year, the class is all excited like what is happening will be fun and a vacation. What was supposed to last one week of no school went to two weeks of online school to the end of April to the rest of the academic year. The new normal of logging onto class on your computer, classmates now being your siblings. Luckily in my house there are lots of activities to keep my family occupied, for the most part. Though the coronavirus has hurt so many globally and is such a negative part of our new life, my family has been able to grow closer. Being quarantined and having our annual Saturday game nights, lots of cooking and baking and outdoor sport activities. My family is lucky and I know that not everyone has such opportunities, and being home is unsafe. This pandemic is something that will never be forgotten. When COVID-19 first began we didn't realize just how much our lives were about to change. When it all started we were told to wash our hands frequently, it wasn't so serious (so we thought) it quickly began to get more and more serious, Before we knew it there were cases popping up all over RI. 2 elementary aged students were diagnosed in my hometown, Westerly.. Soon public schools were cancelled and people began to see just how serious this was getting. It didn't take long for schools to be cancelled all together, students were learning from home.. URI made the call that employees who were able should work from home- We have been working and schooling from home for about 5-6 weeks now. Many people are still getting sick, and so many have passed away. Going to the grocery store is scary, everyone has to wear masks, and the isles in the store are 1 way to help stop overcrowding. We miss our friends and family and we have been in our homes for what feels like years. Rhode Island is slowly beginning to open back up, and we are told we will begin coming back to work on a staggered schedule beginning in June. We will work from home on the days we are not scheduled to be in the office. This has certainly been a challenging time, the economy is really taking a hit. Before we got a chance to blink two weeks became two months and the exciting end to our school year is nothing more than too much blue light and searching the house looking for comfort and security only to find news stations blasting the same news of sickness and loss. New beginnings that once looked so bright fell dark as the world we knew so well changed overnight. The naive faith that I had in people diminished when rather then unity, there was hate and selfishness. Social media flooded with celebrities preaching “stay home” as nurses bonded with their children through glass doors with the intention of keeping them safe. Even phone calls and texting could only last me so long as I fell into the dark abyss of my own thoughts. Conversations get formed from life stories and experiences but with life on pause, the supply of positive things to talk about is slowly shrinking. At the beginning of quarantine, I was bright-eyed with new ideas of recipes and projects but with no one to share my thoughts and creations with my motivation is wearing thin. Never did I think I would live in a time where I cant go visit my grandparents and go places with my friends. The feeling of invincibility that I carried proudly from my youth was stolen from me and will never return. It’s funny how much you can enjoy being a homebody and an introvert until you have to be. Before this, I was never too much of one for going out and doing things, but I have always taken for granted the luxury of getting to do things. I feel like I have changed as a person during the time we have been kept home, even if only little changes. I have also gotten to meet some pretty rad new people and even though I have been in school with many of them for years, the boredom and interest we share has only now brought us together. So while it’s easy to be disappointed of what is being canceled and postponed, it’s important to look back on these times and to realize some good that has come out of this because when it comes down to it I’m sure we all have a pretty good quarantine memory or two.
